Life isn’t measured in minutes, but in moments…”— The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons
COVID-19 made the world ponder strongly on the moments in our lives, for minutes no longer held significance when schedules can be cancelled and loved ones could be lost at any moment. Through the transition from chaos to the new norm, in the past few months the society has all taken a chance to rethink and revalue the meaning of life. UP Gallery is blessed to still be able to present Moments: group show of gallery artists in the summer of 2020. Like many, our various plans were disrupted, our initial program line up and art fairs have all come to a halt. ParisPhoto NY in April and Photofairs Shanghai in September has both been cancelled. Photo London has rescheduled to October at a new venue, but we wait for further notices. Although, it is a pity that we will not have a chance to reconnect with our collectors and audiences in the west, the gallery has taken the time to update our various online platforms and systems. Moreover, it gave us a great opportunity to revisit our collection and curate a new show on our main floor with works from artists Yichia Liao, Sameer Tawde and Kurt Tong. We hope this will be a new beginning for everyone, with selected works and pieces that were never shown to the public, we welcome you back to the gallery space. Moments will always be the most meaningful when we live in it!
Yichia Liao (b. 1961)
Yichia Liao an artist that practices photography and installation art is a significant figure in the field of Taiwan’s contemporary art photography. Liao’s fascination with time since the age of four has been the main reason for becoming an artist and embracing photography, a medium that has the ability to capture, dissect, and manipulate time. His artistic practice surrounds the relationship between time and the universe. Each series he extracts a certain element of the world and probes its relationship with time. His early embracement of digital photography has enabled him to expand this ideology through digital manipulation. Known for his strikingly detailed and excessively high-resolution images he is often viewed as a contemporary pictorialist upon the first encounter. Having a vigorous background in analogue photography and experiences in the darkroom he is highly influenced by modernist values. Yet he adopts issues and conveys his works with a conceptual and critical manner, resulting in an inevitable tension of conceptual and (extravagantly beautiful) subjectivity that coexists in his works which have become his signature style. He is known for series such as: <Inner-self 2010>, <Red Couplets 2011>, <A kind of Spirit 2012>, <Summon of Images 2013>, and <Imagine…Do or Do Not 2015>.
Known for series such as Miracle Robots and Daydreaming Sameer Tawde is a visual artist and photographer currently based in Mumbai, India. Dialogues of an Introvert was the finalist of IPA awards and Holy Boulevard was featured in GUP Magazine. In 2013 and 2014, he was invited for an artist residency at the FUKUOKA ASIAN ART MUSEUM, Japan, and MUSEUM QUAI BRANLY, Paris. In 2012, he was nominated for the Paul Huf Award. His works largely involve humour and play with a fictional approach and are often interlaced with a documentary and an imaginary eye.
Kurt Tong (b.1977)
Lives and works in Hong Kong. Graduated with a master degree in documentary photography at the London College of Communication in 2006, Tong’s work has been widely exhibited in places such as Victoria Museum in Liverpool, UK; Galleri Image in Denmark; the Visual Art Center at the Chinese Cultural Foundation of SanFrancisco, Impressions Gallery in Bradford and Lianzhou Photography Museum. He is known for series such as Sweet Water, Bitter Earth (2014-2106), The
Queen the Chairman and I(2009-2012), Combing for Ice and Jade, and In Case it Rains in Heaven which was also published as a monograph by Kehrer Verlag in 2011. Tong’s works revolve around personal projects exploring his Chinese roots and understanding of his motherland. He is also represented by The Photographers’ Gallery in London.
